Reconciliation Report 2024: Steps Taken, Miles to Go
Reconciliation Report 2024: Steps Taken, Miles to Go presents a comprehensive overview on the state of truth and reconciliation in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, during the 18 months since the release of the 42 Calls for Change that were first published in Our Shared Vision. The report celebrates significant achievements, such as the formation of two Action Circles focused on justice and health as well as a deepening partnership with the City of St. John’s.
The report also highlights barriers that are slowing the pace of progress. These barriers include gaps in public education, inadequate allocation of resources to support truth and reconciliation efforts, and a failure to fully recognize the inherent rights of urban Indigenous Peoples. Despite these obstacles, First Voice continues to work with partners to advocate for systemic change that prioritize redeveloping the K-12 curriculum, strengthening police oversight, and aligning municipal and provincial policymaking with international Indigenous rights standards.
Steps Taken, Miles to Go is an essential resource for anyone committed to truth and reconciliation in Newfoundland and Labrador. It not only outlines the successes achieved in 2023-24 but also identifies the critical next steps that need to be taken in the year ahead.
